Centre for Mass Spectrometry
The infrastructural Centre for mass spectrometry (CMS) performs measurements of different chemical compounds and materials with a mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer is one of the most important tools for identification and characterization of compounds in various substances and materials. Mass spectrometry analytical method is primarily used in research and development in many areas of natural, technical and medical sciences. It is indispensable in organic chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, geology and hydro-geo-chemistry, pharmaceutical and clinical chemistry, control of drugs, food and beverages, doping control, in forensics and in many other areas of science, process engineering and research and medicine.
Centre for Mass Spectrometry as part of a Department of Environmental Sciences at Jožef Stefan Institute providing services to mass spectrometric measurements of organic compounds and biomolecules, and studies of ions in the gas phase of mass spectrometer. In CMS two mass spectrometers are installed. Annually around 2000 mass spectrometric measurements are done on various samples of the new synthesized organic compounds, active ingredients, food, environmental samples, forensic samples, biological and other materials, biopolimers, geological, and many other substances and materials.
