Head: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vekoslava Stibilj

Methods:
  • Radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) (ng/g, pg/g): As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, I, Mn, Mo, Sb, Se, Th, U, V, W, Zn
  • Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA, K0-INAA, FTPS: multielemental analysis (µg/g)
  • Determination of tritium (3H) and strontium (89Sr, 90Sr) in various environmental samples
  • Determination of 14C in basic solutions
  • Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS)
  • high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)

Applications:

  • Uptake, distribution and metabolism of some non-essential and toxic elements
  • Determination of concentration levels of essential and toxic elements in food, biological samples and environmental samples
  • Characterisation of standard reference materials
  • Monitoring tritium and strontium levels in the environment (Slovenian Programme, Programme for NEK – Krško Nuclear Power Plant and some individual clients)
  • Determination of 14C in gas efffuents
  • Cooperation with inspection officials

Research areas:
  • Development of methods for analysing microelements and trace elements
  • Evaluation of some parameters in the INAA method
  • Development of methods for speciation of elements in biological samples
  • Education: undergraduate students, PhD students, students on specialisation, scholarship students (IAEA)
